Dhaka is the capital of Bangladesh. In the past, the English language used the correct spelling, which was changed in 1982. Dhaka is a megacity and also one of the major cities of South Asia. Located on the banks of the Buriganga river, this city is the largest city in Bangladesh. Dhaka is the ninth largest and one of the most populous cities in the world. Dhaka city is also known as the city of mosques. Here the world's best muslin was produced. Currently, Dhaka is one of the main cultural, educational and commercial centers of South Asia.
The city was built in the Dhaka region between 700 and 1200 AD. There is wide disagreement about the exact history of the naming of Dhaka. It is said that King Ballal Sen of the Sen dynasty found an idol of the Hindu goddess Durga in the nearby forest while traveling in the area along the Buriganga river. King Ballal Sen established a temple in the area as a tribute to Goddess Durga. As the idol of the goddess was found covered or hidden, the king named the temple Dhakeshwari temple. From the name of the temple, the name of the place developed as Dhaka. According to many historians, the Mughal Emperor Jahangir declared Dhaka as the capital of Subah Bengal (present-day Bangladesh, West Bengal, Bihar, several regions of Orissa) in 1610 AD; Then Subadar Islam Khan ordered to play 'Dhak' in the city as an expression of joy. The story of playing the dhaka became a folk legend and hence the name of the city became Dhaka. It should be noted here that Dhaka was known as Jahangirnagar in honor of Sultan Jahangir for some time during the Mughal Empire.
