Authorities have ramped up efforts to screen travelers returning from India via the Benapole land port in a bid to stop the spread of a new Covid-19 variant. Recent reports indicate a surge in Covid-19 cases across several states in India, leading the government to implement precautionary measures. During a recent visit to the Benapole Checkpost Immigration, it was observed that officials at the medical desk were diligently screening incoming travelers. Hari Das, a passenger who had traveled to India for medical treatment, shared, “I went to India for treatment 10 days ago and returned today. There wasn’t any testing or examination for Covid-19 anywhere in India, just like in Bangladesh.” Another passenger, Monika Rani, stated, “I came back today after a month of treatment. I haven’t heard of any new Covid-19 outbreaks in India, but now I see that they are conducting Covid-19 tests upon my return.” Abdul Majid, a sub-assistant medical officer with the Immigration Health Department at Benapole Checkpost, confirmed that genetic sequencing has identified the presence of a new Covid strain in parts of India. “To prevent this variant from reaching our country, we are conducting health checks on all returnees from India as a precautionary measure,” he noted. If any returning passenger displays symptoms of Covid-19, they will be isolated at the upazila health complex for further evaluation.
