Every smartphone manufacturer is in a race to incorporate AI technology seamlessly into our lives, but so far, none have fully figured it out. Samsung was among the first to embrace Google's Gemini AI, which has effectively replaced its often overlooked Bixby assistant. Recently, a report surfaced suggesting that Samsung is gearing up for a significant AI transformation by teaming up with Perplexity for the upcoming Galaxy S26. Perplexity presents itself as an AI-powered search tool, utilizing generative AI technology akin to that found in ChatGPT, Gemini, and similar platforms. Unlike traditional chatbots, it places a strong emphasis on citing its sources across the internet. The company made headlines during the Google search antitrust trial when executive Dmitry Shevelenko revealed that Google prevented Motorola from adopting Perplexity for its 2024 smartphones. However, this year, Perplexity secured its spot on the 2025 Razr phones. According to a report from Bloomberg, Samsung is set to follow suit by leveraging Perplexity's AI capabilities. The two companies are reportedly on the verge of finalizing a deal that will integrate this AI model as a central feature of the Galaxy S26 series. While Motorola employs Perplexity for its Moto AI's search functions, the arrangement with Samsung is expected to be much more extensive.Under the terms of the proposed agreement, Samsung is set to incorporate Perplexity into both its web browser and the Bixby assistant. Reports suggest that Perplexity could even take over as the default assistant on the upcoming Galaxy S26. This could significantly benefit Perplexity, especially considering that most users rarely change their device’s default settings, a key insight from the recent Google antitrust trial. As per Bloomberg, negotiations are ongoing; although both parties have met in South Korea and laid out a preliminary framework, the deal is not finalized. The discussions have also included the potential for embedding AI into operating systems and creating systems that can seamlessly integrate with various AI providers. Meanwhile, Google is making a strong push to incorporate its Gemini AI across all its products and devices. This comes in response to the surprise popularity of ChatGPT, which has emerged as a significant competitor to Google’s search dominance, marking the greatest challenge since Bing's lackluster performance. To solidify its position, Google aims to ensure that new smartphones feature the Gemini app as the default assistant. However, the company is under heightened scrutiny following three consecutive losses in antitrust cases. These legal challenges revolve around the exclusivity agreements Google has historically struck with smartphone manufacturers like Samsung. Notably, Google secured an arrangement that positioned Gemini as the default assistant for the Galaxy S25 series, effectively sidelining Bixby. One of the few compromises Google has agreed to in the antitrust issues was to abandon its exclusivity demands in placement deals, and it appears the company is adopting a more flexible approach. With Google allowing its mobile partners more freedom, we can expect an increase in AI integration across phones. For instance, Motorola's new Razr models feature AI capabilities from various companies, including Meta, Microsoft, Perplexity, and Google.
