A new feature called 'Communities' is coming to WhatsApp, a messaging platform owned by Meter. The company hopes that with this feature it will be easier to run large group activities like schools and offices.
The announcement to test the new feature came on Thursday. The feature will bring together groups with a maximum of 256 users. As a result, admins can easily send alerts to a group of users, says WhatsApp head Will Cathcart. "It's based on the groups that are already part of your life and the people you're maintaining personal contact with," Cathcart said in an interview with Reuters.
He cites communication tools like Salesforce-owned ‘Slack’ or ‘Microsoft Teams’ as a comparison of the feature. He said there was no plan to raise money from the new feature. The feature's beta has been tested on a handful of global groups. However, he did not rule out the possibility of a 'premium feature' in the future.
The end-to-end encrypted messaging service has about 200 million users. The community feature will also be end-to-end encrypted, the company said.
