Durga Puja, the biggest religious festival of Sanatan Dharma followers, will begin on September 25 through Mahalaya. After 2 long years due to Corona, puja will be celebrated in 32 thousand 168 mandaps across the country in a massive arrangement. In view of last year's incident, precautions are being taken to ensure safety. The main puja will start on October 1, which will end on October 5 with the immersion of idols.
Sanatan religious leaders gave this information in an exchange meeting with journalists at Dhakeshwari National Temple auditorium in the capital on Saturday morning regarding this year's Durgotsavam.
JL Bhowmik, president of the council, said, "In the context of last year's incident, this year the government wants no incident to happen under any circumstances. Law enforcement agencies are more active this year than last year. We feel it is very difficult to protect our 32 thousand 168 temples. So we are appointing volunteers in every temple this year, who will keep watch even at night.''
He said, 'We are completely safe, it cannot be said. Incidents can happen, but we are very aware this time. Maximum CCTV system has been kept. Various messages have been conveyed to the villages. Especially those temples which are temporary temples are more vulnerable. The pavilions which are set up in fields, grounds or various roads rather than in permanent places are more risky. There we have to keep more and more guard and sit all night.'
Calling on the government to enact laws for the protection of religious minorities before the next elections, JL Bhowmick said, "Because of the culture of injustice, religious minorities are repeatedly attacked. In the 2018 election, the ruling Awami League's manifesto has mentioned the Minority Protection Act. It must be done before the next election.
He also said, "We have said that such a law should be made, as acid was thrown in Bangladesh, as a result of making a special law providing the maximum punishment, but it has been completely reduced." We also need to make such a law, which should provide maximum punishment for those who are guilty and should be tried in special court in less time.
Professor Chandranath Poddar, general secretary of Puja Udjakar Parishad, said that last year, the number of Durga Pujas across the country was 32 thousand 118. This time this number has increased to 32 thousand 168. The number of pujas in Dhaka metropolis is 241, which is 6 more than last year.
He said that the number of pujas is increasing every year after the current government came to power. The economic growth of the country and donations from well-wishers undoubtedly played a role in increasing the number of pujas. An increase in the number of pujas is certainly pleasing. However, with the increase in the number of pujas, the issue of puja-centric security also needs to be taken into consideration.
Chandranath Poddar said, 'Puja, Eid, Christmas, Buddhist Purnima are very sacred to every community. We are looking forward to a society in which Eid-Puja-Bardin-Buddhist Purnima and other religious and public social events will be held smoothly, in a non-communal environment, without any form of intimidation and police guard.
